Weber’s Way to Grill: The Step-by-Step Guide to Expert Grilling (Sunset Books)

With all the BBQ and grilling books that are published, it’s easy to formulate the attitude “Oh yeah, just what I need — one more grilling book.” However, if you’re a grilling aficionado, to bypass this one would be a mistake.

From the start, it has a couple of things going for it. First, it’s from Sunset books, probably the finest publisher of ‘how to’ style books in the country. Second, it’s written by Jamie Purviance, an excellent author who not only has the expertise, but also the right attitude towards grilling (very down-to-earth; not snotty in the least). As someone who has grilled for many years, I wish I had this book 30 years ago, as my technique today would undoubtedly be even better.

The book is aptly titled, for it includes detailed procedures for grilling most anything. Purviance skips no details, from starting your fire, to using the right cooking layout, to preparing your meat, to tending your meal properly. Everything is explained in simple (though detailed) terms with an abundance of helpful photographs. As I read through it, one phrase kept popping into my mind: “So THAT’S the way I should have been doing that.”

Accompany this with an abundance of fresh and creative recipes (e.g., Rib Eye steaks with espresso chili rub, Truly Barbecued Brisket, Chicken Skewers with Honey Lime Cream, Smoked Tuna with Grilled Mango) and you have a winning book on grilling. Weber’s Way to Grill has definitely moved to the top of my stack for grilling technique and for recipes. It’s going to see a lot of use.
